1. Information We Collect (“we” being me, my website hosting provider, Squarespace, and my email list provider, EmailOctopus)

When you visit this website, Squarespace Analytics automatically collects certain standard information about your device and your visit. This includes:

• Information about your browser, network, and device

• Web pages you visited prior to coming to this website

• Your IP address

This data helps me understand site traffic and improve website performance.

I use a UK-based email list provider called EmailOctopus to manage my email list and send my monthly letter. If you sign up for my monthly letter, I collect your email address & first name. EmailOctopus processes and manages that data on my behalf so you can subscribe or unsubscribe, and so I can send you email.

EmailOctopus also integrates Google reCAPTCHA v3 into the signup form to protect my list from automated spam bots. This service operates in the background by analyzing user behavior patterns (such as mouse movements, typing cadence, and scroll actions) and device hardware/software data (including your IP address and browser configurations) to calculate a security risk score. The data processing is handled by Google on my behalf based on my legitimate interest in maintaining the integrity and security of my email communications.

Per their own privacy policies, as data processors, Squarespace, EmailOctopus and Google are explicitly prohibited from using your data for marketing purposes.

2. How We Use Cookies

By default, Squarespace blocks all non-essential cookies.

• Essential Cookies: We use necessary cookies to allow you to securely navigate and use the features of this website.

• Analytics Cookies: If you choose "Accept" in the cookie banner, we use optional analytics cookies to see how visitors interact with the site (e.g., pages viewed, time spent on the site). If you choose "Decline," these analytics cookies remain blocked.

If you sign up for my monthly letter, EmailOctopus integrates Google reCAPTCHA v3 in the signup process to protect against automated bots, and tracks email opens and clicks so I can better gauge reader engagement.

3. Third-Party Sharing

Aside from what I’ve described above, there is no other third-party sharing on this website or in my email list.

I don’t use third-party marketing tools, ad trackers, or pixels. No Google Analytics, no Meta Pixel, no programmatic ads.
